Restaurant Feature: The Living Room

If a leisurely lunch is long overdue, a quick climb up the steps to The Living Room (514 – 17th Avenue SW) is definitely a must-do.

A long-standing institution on the avenue for more than 14 years, The Living Room has long been the place to go for dinner dates, celebrations and cozy catch-ups. Classic decor, soft lighting and intimate spaces mix to create the relaxed atmosphere.

The Living Room is constantly reinventing its stand-out favourites with new inspirations, and the dining experience is at the heart of the menu.

“What separates us – and always has – is interactive cuisine,” shares restaurant owner, Patrick Hill. “Interactive, family-style has always been our thing, and we create experiences that you can share together at the table, from our fondues, charcuterie and double-cuts of meat.”

We couldn’t resist indulging in some of The Living Room’s classic dishes, so we kicked off our lunch with the Beef Tartare ($16) and the charcuterie board ($24), a showcase of house-cured meats, fine cheeses and olives.

For our main, we decided on the Daily Made burger ($16), served on a brioche bun with chickpea soup.

With a new season on the horizon, we seized the opportunity to savour the watermelon caprese salad ($16), available for a short while longer until executive chef Kevin Hill reveals the winter menu in the upcoming weeks.

When Patrick and Kevin aren’t hard at work at The Living Room, you might spot them at some of their favourite spots on the avenue.

“I like to pop into Analog for coffee, and Cilantro for dinner; I’ve always loved their food and the room,” says Patrick. “The kitchen staff are really big fans of Lorenzo’s Pizza,” adds Kevin.

We couldn’t bring our lunch to an end without recharging for the afternoon ahead. Before the days of Red Bull, The Living Room had The Shaft – a tall, dark and cool cocktail made of Kahlua, espresso and skim milk. Not to be sipped slowly, knocking back this creative pick-me-up is a favourite way to refuel before leaving the Living Room for whatever lies ahead.

Coming with a crowd? Consider booking the private room, a unique space for everything from business meetings to parties that can accommodate up to 30 of your nearest and dearest.

Bonus: there’s ample parking directly behind the restaurant.

And though we might wander for a while, The Living Room always feels like home.
