Comfort Food at Buttermilk Fine Waffles

Buttermilk 1_Resized
Now that summer has cooled into crisp autumn, the need for comfort food has increased exponentially. When winter hits Calgary there are few things that can soothe the frostbitten soul. Except, of course waffles. Golden, toasty, topped high with fruit and whipped cream or melted cheese and arugula. These are the kinds of waffles you find at Buttermilk Fine Waffles (330, 17th Ave. SW) and paired with a fresh squeezed orange juice or a Phil and Sebastian coffee they can lighten the dreariest day.Buttermilk 3_Resized
Buttermilk is cozy and bright, with a beautiful hand-painted wall that took local artists from Secret City hours and hours to complete. The menu is divided between sweet and savoury and specials change based on the season and according to the website on “what we dream up”. One of the dreamiest waffles Buttermilk has to offer is the Village: Village vanilla ice cream, melted chocolate or sticky toffee, toasted pecans, whipped cream. It’s no surprise that the menu features Village Ice Cream, being that the owner of Village and Sam Friley of Buttermilk are brothers. On the menu alongside the extra-indulgent waffles, sits The Classic, the simplest but most satisfying of waffles, the waffle with butter and maple syrup.Buttermilk 4_Resized
On a recent visit, we opted for a savoury waffle, topped with arugula, Irish cheddar, asiago, Chinook honey, and chilli oil and the fruit waffle, topped high with fresh fruit, raspberry cream, strawberry syrup, and whipped cream. For all you savoury-lovers, the slight kick of the chilli oil alongside the honey and the melted cheese was as tasty as a cheese pizza from Una Pizza but on a WAFFLE! The sweet waffle was a delicious complement to coffee with cream, we suggest sharing with a friend so you can have the full sweet and savoury experience. Or just go back often and try them all.

Buttermilk has a no reservations policy and a casual, family–friendly atmosphere, allowing them to host events like Buttermilk Cinema, where they show free movies on Monday nights. The Wes Anderson film Rushmore was so popular that they decided to bring another Anderson film in for November. You can vote on the next flick and check out the upcoming cinema schedule on Buttermilk’s Instagram feed.
