This quintessential 17th Ave coffee shop was inspired by coffee’s origins in western world history, when philosophers would idle around in cafes, contemplating their big ideas. The idea behind Philosafy is to recreate that “think tank” tradition, and welcome people from all walks of life into this cozy, downtown café for an afternoon of good coffee, baked goods and lounging.
Quality, Ethically Sourced Coffee
There’s nothing quite like a fresh brewed cup of joe, and at Philosafy, they roast their coffee once a week in small batches, and consciously and ethically select and source quality beans from around the world. Take a browse through their Socrates’ Marketplace, where you can pick up their espresso, coffee and tea along with essential coffee accessories such as brewers, kettles and grinders.
Freshly Baked Croissants, Cinnamon Buns and More
7th Ave is known as one of the best places in Calgary to sit and enjoy a bout of people watching on a warm day, or to pop into one of the various shops for some delicious baked goods, and local finds. Philosofay’s central location makes it an ideal pit stop during your Red Mile visit. Pop a squat, dive into one of their Butterblock baked goods, and wash it down with a big old cappuccino. Butterblock’s fresh baked goods arrive at Philosafy daily, and consist of sweet and savoury pastries such as almond croissants, cinnamon buns and cheese knots.

Take Philosafy Home With You
You can also wake up to Philosafy’s quality beans brewing in your own kitchen with their selection of take-home beans – cleverly named after Greek philosophers, and complete with origin info down to the farms the beans were grown at. For those who need that extra dose of caffeine in their day, try one of Philosafy’s espressos; Socrates Espresso, which is a blend of two different coffees from Ethiopia and Guatemala, featuring notes of caramel sweetness and nectarine, or their Aristotle espresso – a single origin roast from Costa Rica, with notes of cinnamon, apple pie, baking spice and lemon zest. You can also bring home their Epicurus or Plato coffees – from the Kirinyaga region in Kenya and Panama, respectively– which are the perfect addition for a slow morning in and many, many refills from your French press.
