The Ship and Anchor (534 17th Avenue S.W.) has been an avenue staple for over 24 years, so it’s likely we’ve all spent a night at the Ship with a story to tell. The Ship spurs loyalty that guarantees return customers, and with many regulars and newcomers alike, this is the place you can find the bejeweled rubbing shoulders with the tattooed.
It’s not difficult to tell what’s behind the Ship’s success – unpretentious atmosphere, quality food and an eclectic crowd. The authentic community hub has a full calendar of events, from live music to their “Show Up & Ship Out” program that supports the local arts communities through a variety of events. Of course, the Ship’s patio is still the place to get to on a sunny afternoon, hopefully before the crowd gets there.
With menu items from $3.95 to $11.95, you get affordably priced eats and fair-sized portions; no one’s complaining any time soon. So pull up a bench, grab a beer from their wide selection of local brews and imported ales and settle in for lunch.
We decided on the featured dairy and gluten free Vegan Burger ($9.95) and the classic Lemongrass Chicken ($9.95) on a bed of rice noodles accompanied by lettuce, bean sprouts, peanuts, carrots, cucumbers and green onions. The dishes are down-to-earth, unassuming and what you’d expect if your mom made it. It’s hard to find vegan, dairy and gluten free burgers and a bowl of Vietnamese goodnesss on the same menu, so we’d suggest coming down to the Ship to find crowd pleasing mains.
No need to rush off after your meal, bask in what’s left of summer in Calgary. Clear the deck for a good time and get down to the Ship.
