Walk With…Casey Logan

Navigating the dating scene is far from easy and Calgary Sun columnist, Casey Logan lives to write about it. “Armed with not much more than her heart on her sleeve and razor-sharp wit, she explores the Calgary dating scene with her pen, paper, and her red solo cup.” With February typically being the month of love (or single’s awareness, depending on who you talk to), we catch up with our city’s resident dating columnist who is always down for a good hang out along the Ave.

Tell us a bit about yourself…
Describing ones self is always a task. I’m your average athlete-stuck-in-a-nerds-body, and I have the coordination to back up that statement. If I’m not planted in front of my laptop, I’m usually falling down on a ball diamond somewhere, or tripping over my two left feet, probably because my nose is stuck in a book.

What projects are you involved with right now?
Currently, I write the weekly dating column for the Calgary Sun, and I contribute to Modern Socialite on a monthly basis.

What do you like to do when you’re on 17th?
Meeting up with some girlfriends, grabbing a coffee and going window shopping. I’m not much of a shopper but what I like about 17th is the wide variety of stores. It never fails to pique my curiosity. After shopping, I like to refuel with lunch and cocktails, not necessarily in that order.

Where is your go-to date spot on 17th?
I’m a giant nerd, so meeting at Analog to grab a coffee and then walking to the bookstore is my idea of a perfect date. I find there’s always something to talk about and you’re not stuck at a table in a crowded cafe.

What is your take on dating on 17th?
I love going for dates on 17th. It’s easy to plan a date with anyone, because of the wide variety of shops. You can plan a coffee date, dinner date, or drinks. It’s a great place to go after a hockey game. Random encounters of the dating kind…that is what 17th is good for.

Is there a 17th Ave dating story you could share?
My favorite story about 17th dates back to 2004, during the Red Mile days. Who doesn’t have an awesome story from that time?  Being an avid Canucks fan, I was definitely the girl who was looked at askance when I would walk into Melrose wearing a Vancouver jersey.  I ended up meeting a guy there, but we never exchanged numbers. He had, however, somehow discovered where my office was located. When the Canucks lost in game seven, and after the party on 17th was over, I went into the office the next day, more than a little tired. On my desk was a dozen red roses with a card “Sorry for your loss”. I had to explain to everyone that there wasn’t a death in my family, only a death in my hockey season.

What is your best-kept 17th Ave secret?
I have prime parking when I meet up with my friends to watch football on Sundays, but if I tell you where I’d have to kill you 😉

Favourite place to shop?
I’m a sucker for consignment shops, so whenever I’m in the area I like to pop into Danielle’s Consignment. You never know what you’re going to find, and the staff is always very helpful.

Best place for a night out on 17th?
Roosevelt. Awesome crowd, great menu, the servers are knowledgeable, and the bathrooms are always clean.

What would you like to see on 17th in the future?
I am really looking forward to Trolley Five opening up. There’s nothing like a cold beer and watching the hockey game.

What’s up next for you? Where might we see/read you next?
I’ve recently started work on my first novel, which is proving to be a lesson in patience, so don’t hold your breath for that! Opportunities are around every corner, so you never know when or where I’ll pop up next.

In the meantime check out her weekly column in the Calgary Sun and follow her on Twitter @CaseyLogansLife.
