WHO TO CALL FOR HELP
911 is to be used only for emergencies (police, fire and medical) where an immediate response is required, This should be called only if there is an emergency and lives are in danger, immediate assistance is required or there is a crime in progress.
This should be used for all non-emergency situations, where an immediate response is not required. This number is called when time has elapsed since the incident, the suspect is not on scene or you are calling about a nuisance issue (i.e. noise, complaints, suspicious people, intoxication, etc.) Police will attend on a lower priority basis.
If you observe an individual who appears to be intoxicated, loitering, trespassing or sleeping in an area that they should not be but otherwise appear peaceful and not being aggressive call the “Downtown Outreach Partnership Team” or D.O.A.P. Team – mobile team available to transport individuals that are not able to come to the Alpha house location on their own. The DOAP team members are well acquainted with their clientele and have a good rapport with them.
Hours:
- Monday-Friday 8:30am – 1:00am
- Saturday – Sunday 5:00pm – 1:00am.
The CROs (Community Resource Officers) provide a key point of contact for the community policing initiatives and problem-solving. They monitor crime trends, traffic and social issues within their zone. They also keep track of the crime issues that are of particular concern to residents.
Social Disorder
If you have any social disorder concerns such as an increase in thefts, drug use on private property, vandalism as well as aggressive and abusive behavior by members of the public or what appear to be transient peoples; the BIA is interested in hearing from your business if this is an occurrence that you have noticed, what you’ve experienced personally and how it’s affected your business. The data gathered will be shared with the Board and the City of Calgary as well in efforts to find additional solutions to these continued issues.
The BIA is working with Bylaw Services, the DOAP team and the Calgary Drop In Center to help with Social Disorder concerns. An operational plan is being created for 17th ave and will be shared with the membership once it is completed.
Workshops
Calgary Police Services will be providing two workshops about how to address encounters with vulnerable populations who you or your staff may encounter while working.
The first workshop was held on July 2nd , 2019 and the second is TBA. BIA members will receive a newsletter once the second workshop date is confirmed. If you are interested in attending, please email the BIA and let us know if you will be bringing staff. The workshops are free of charge and open to the membership.
