This local, French-inspired bakery may have only opened in January 2019, but Black Sheep has already made its mark as one of Calgary’s best bakeries, appearing in Best of Calgary’s best bakery list, as well as Avenue Magazine’s 15 Bakeries to try now.
Handmade, baked to perfection, and featuring unique flavours such as pineapple rum or strawberry basil, the croissants at Black Sheep are almost too pretty to eat. Although, as soon as you get a whiff of these buttery, indulgent French pastries, it will be hard to limit yourself to just one.
Handcrafted French Delicacies
Black Sheep serves up handcrafted French delicacies like Madeleines, a traditional, shell-shaped sponge cake from the Northeastern region of France, or Kouign Amann, a pastry made from croissant dough baked with extra sugar and butter. And of course, an abundance of fresh baked croissants.
You can’t go wrong with a traditional butter croissant, but there are plenty of flavours to choose from, including raspberry or blueberry, which are filled with Black Sheep’s house made jam. Having trouble deciding? Try their mystery bags, which include an unspecified collection of four house baked croissants or Kouign Amanns for $10.
Pantry Items and House made Goods
In addition to Black Sheep’s mouth-watering bakery items, you can also shop their pantry section, where you can find an assortment of products made in house or brought in from France. House made jams, marmalades and spreads come in flavours like fresh lemon, cranberry and violet or staples like raspberry and blueberry.
If you’re feeling inspired to bake something of your own after eating your way through Black Sheep’s plethora of sweet treats, browse other specialty items including Midnight Black Cocoa Powder, Valrhona Chocolate Sticks and fresh or active dry yeast.
Located at 140-815 17 Ave SW, this fan favourite bakery is currently offering takeaway, pickup, and delivery from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, and Wednesday through Sunday (closed on Tuesdays).
