Though MARKET hasn’t been on the avenue for long, they are quickly becoming a favourite dining destination with an excellent reputation. Recent accolades include being named Calgary’s best new restaurant by famed food critic John Gilchrist, and a nomination as one of Canada’s Best New Restaurants in 2013 by enRoute Magazine. The farm to table concept is paired with black and white contemporary-meets-country-kitchen decor, creating a beautiful backdrop in which to enjoy their fresh, homemade ingredients.
If you’ve arrived hungry, MARKET offers a lunch special that will do the trick. For $25, we enjoyed 3 courses and started with a delicious cup of parsnip soup, served with truffle oil.
For our second course, we were intrigued by the breakfast burger, and were delighted when it arrived with a perfectly grilled sausage patty and egg.
If in the mood for a lighter option, we recommend the Kale Salad ($15) served with double smoked bacon, Caesar vinaigrette, parmesan crisps and hens egg.
We finished with the third course of our lunch special, mouth-watering creations from MARKET’s Pastry Chef.
We not only enjoyed a fantastic meal at MARKET, but had fun learning about their fresh ingredient philosophy as well. They make their own breads daily, cure their own meats, do all of their butchering, make their own cheese and grow herbs, micro greens and select vegetables on site. MARKET is the first restaurant in Calgary to use an internal home garden, the Urban Cultivator, where they grow more than 16 different varieties of heirloom seeds year round.
MARKET welcomes feedback from their customers and offers a unique sounding board: pop into the washrooms and leave some graffiti on the chalkboard-painted stalls.
