With its modern twist on the classic 1920’s speakeasy, Lounge XVIII (1005 17th Ave SW) is the new talk of the Ave. Inspired by the prestige and charm of illegal bars that operated during the prohibition era, 17th’s latest cocktail bar recreates the atmosphere of a time filled with flappers, gangsters and those willing to risk it all for a stiff drink.

The lounge was designed by one of 17th Ave’s own design groups, Martin Lee, who used concepts of “out-of-body” art, low lighting, posh furniture and a moody colour scheme to give the space it’s classy and glamorous feel. Its eye-catching exterior makes it easy to spot and once you step inside, you’ll be transported. “Martin Lee added to our vision of spectacular.” shares owner Jamal Afzaly.

“17th Ave is a very important part of Calgary. It’s a social hub for the community where people from all walks of life come to showcase their backgrounds and see their ideas flourish. We wanted to be a part of the movement and give our community a different venue.” he adds.

Inspired by mixology, art and good status, we built an establishment to enhance the cocktail lounge scene giving Calgary what they’ve been missing.

Combining house-made cocktail recipes, mixes and garnishes, XVIII offers an extensive cocktail menu that includes sweet, bitter and exotic flavors, with fun twists on traditional favourites. Sip the Smokey Old Fashioned and South of the Border, which include an entertaining performance of burning coals on an old oak cask giving them a rich smokey flavour. For a sweeter concoction, try the La Espada De Las Niñas, with agave spirits, St. Germaine and a spritz of Absinthe.

If you’re arriving hungry, Lounge XVIII works elements of comfort food through its menu that make for a mix of tantalizing flavours within each dish. You won’t go wrong with their Beef Carpaccio, and finishing with a warm White Chocolate Cake served with Made by Marcus ice cream is an exceptional choice.
