Though there always seems to be a new place to try for lunch on 17th, there’s just something about our favourites that makes it hard to stray. Midori Japanese (1054 17th Ave S.W.) has been an avenue institution for over 15 years – their casual atmosphere lets you come as you are and their quiet booths are the perfect place to indulge in a warm bowl of miso and some flavour-packed rolls.
Large white paper lanterns set the scene in this small but mighty space, settle up to the bar to catch all the action or take it outside to the patio and enjoy some 17th Ave people-watching as you dig in.
Kick things off with a cup of green tea and some miso, then choose from a variety of inspired creations. If your stomach is howling, go with their popular lunch special to try a bit of everything or, if you can’t decide, treat yo’ self like we did and just do both.
The Lunch Special comes in at $10.50 with tons of combinations to choose from: nigiri sushi, teriyaki chicken or beef, or tempura – all served with rice and salad.
Their sushi chef has been in the house for over 10 years, and we decided to try his popular Midori Roll ($11) perfectly blending tempura shrimp, cream cheese and delicately topped with salmon and mango.
Their decadent rolls and well-priced specials will leave you smiling and satisfied, and their cozy and casual vibe means you can stop by anytime. If your cravings strike late into the night, like any good pal – Midori is there for you and on most days, they don’t close up shop until 10 p.m.
Late night sushi runs welcome.
