Step through the doors of Rustic Sourdough Bakery (1305 17 Ave S.W.) and into a little piece of Europe right here on 17th. Open for over 40 years, you can ogle more than a few sweet treats in their bakery (hello, chocolate tarts ) as well as take in the smells of the freshly baked bread that made them famous.
Venture left and you will discover their deli chalked full of traditional meats, cheeses and European products that you can take home with you. If ever you sat in your grandmother’s kitchen and devoured her recipes from the homeland, this is the place for you. Owner John Juurlink has Dutch roots and is happy to be a destination for those looking for a little taste of Europe.
“We sell Schnitzel sandwiches and German cheesecakes, but we are proud to offer something for everyone.”
The deli counter is a perfect place to dig into a delicious lunch, with daily soups, salads and of course, handcrafted sandwiches. $8 will get your hands on a hearty sandwich, and you can create your own, order the feature or choose from their popular recipes like Italian Night Club, Thanksgiving or Prosciutto Avocado.
We opted for the Grilled Pesto Party ($8) on multigrain, featuring turkey, Iberico cheese, pesto, tomatoes and lettuce, and couldn’t resist treating ourselves to a hazelnut raspberry cookie ($1.95) to wash it all down.
Rustic mixes unbelievably fresh ingredients, crafts them together by hand and creates a nostalgic and affordable lunchtime stopover. Follow them online below to stay up-to-date on all things Rustic Sourdough Bakery.
