When the words “kale salad” just don’t meet the mark, and quinoa anything is too much to bear, you know it’s time to head to Tubby Dog (1022 17th Avenue S.W.). Tried and true, Tubby Dog has been there for you like man’s best friend since 2005.
With their creative combinations like the famous PBJ (peanut butter & jelly, Cap’n Crunch optional) or their classic Tubby Dog with homemade chili, bacon, cheese, onions, and mustard – it’s the place to go when only a delicious hot dog will do.
Their reputation as an avenue institution for fun and games is well earned, a vintage vibe is amped up with arcade games, cartoons playing on the walls and an excellent selection of tunes. Tubby Dog is as much a live music venue as it is a stopover for fast food goodness.
“We’ve usually got concerts booked on Saturday nights, and local music is our focus.” shares Manager Keaton Pridham. “We’re all passionate about Calgary’s music scene, and have recently introduced TD Presents – evening gigs chosen by all of us as a team.”
If you can’t wait for a show or make it to dinner, head to Tubby Dog for lunch like we did. We devoured the A-Bomb ($7.75) – a perfect marriage of cheese, bacon, chips, ketchup and mustard, complete with a deviled egg on the side ($1.00).
Though their hot dogs have made them famous, Tubby has a rotating menu throughout the week. Enjoy Taco Tuesdays or Burgers on Wednesdays, both starting at 7 p.m. If you have a whole pack to feed, catering is now available and you can bring all the hot dog, burger or taco goodness straight to your door.
