Una Pizza + Wine

When UNA opened its doors in 2010, local pizza lovers rejoiced. Inspired by similar haunts in California, UNA (618 – 17th Avenue SW) offers an elegant and relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy their thin crust, California-style pizzas.

A favourite destination of trendy tastemakers and stylish foodies, evenings at UNA are charged with eclectic energy and food-fueled conversations. The vibe is casual but sophisticated, contemporary decor mixes with panoramic art installations that run throughout the space and change every few months. The current tropical Tiki theme is a welcome winter warm-up, created by local artist Stephen Bender, artist by night and Telus worker by day.

Get-togethers and gatherings at UNA can last late into the night, with a kitchen that closes at 1 a.m. But when UNA pizza is on your mind, it’s hard to wait until dinner – so we stopped in for lunch.

We settled in at the bar, perfect for people watching and front row seats to all the action in the kitchen. We whet our appetites with the walnut stuffed Persian dates, perfectly wrapped in prosciutto and baked in vincotto ($2 each).

Tacos are everything right now, and UNA is joining the party. New to their menu are Fish Tacos ($10), featuring seasonal fish, Thai chili slaw with aioli foraged greens salsa on a a corn tortilla.

Choosing a pizza at UNA is no easy task, but we decided on their feature pizza, partly because it sounds delicious, but also to support a great cause. UNA participates in Mealshare, a buy one, give one program that donates a meal on your behalf to someone in need when you order a Mealshare menu item. The meal is donated through a local charity partner or internationally, through Save the Children.

With provolone, watercress, bresola, grana padano, vincotto and mushrooms, this mealshare main ($22) was good to the last bite.

Stop in for lunch or dinner seven days a week, and stay up-to-date on all things UNA by following them online below:
