Handmade on the Ave.

We’re getting hands-on this month. From hand-making terrariums and macarons to feeling the benefits of the healing touch, Mount Royal Village on 17th Ave has tons of ways to get in touch with your creative side and balance your body and mind.

West Elm

There’s something special about bringing home a piece you created, and West Elm (808 16th Ave SW) makes that fun and easy with their terrarium building station. With so many options of succulents and cactus, planters, and decorations, there are endless ways to customize your masterpiece to any space.

West Elm also loves local and hosts pop-ups at no cost for makers to bring their wares to the neigbourhood! Their local artist pop-up program is a reflection of the dedication they have to local artists hosting a different artisan weekly. From textile artists to florists, ceramicists to jewellers, painters to cobblers and builders, you can find it at West Elm. As Catherine Abbott, Pop-Up Coordinator tells us, “It’s about reducing the urban footprint by using materials in Calgary created by locals and connecting people.”

For the month of June, you’ll find these talented artists – Jill Paddock (until June 4th) with her colourful oil based abstract paintings, Sweat Society (June 8th – 11th) with a collection of their ethical active wear, Reandu Furniture (June 12th – 18th) showcasing his stunning reclaimed furniture, L. Remple (June 12th-18th) with her vibrant textiles, Grand Cerulean (June 23rd-25th) featuring her bold acrylic and ink pieces, Maria Arseniuk (June 24th) with her witty “Femmbriodery” and Jill Weston (June 26th – July 2nd) with her nature-inspired watercolour prints.

Ollia Macarons & Tea

The creations at Ollia are so stunning (810C 16th Ave SW) it’s hard to believe you can make those too-pretty-to-eat macarons too! The art of macaron making does require practice, skill, and patience, but co-owner Lindsay ensures that their Macaron 101 class “is hands-on so people can get the most out of it and learn macaronnage to bake at home as well.”

If you want to bring more than just those beautiful pastries home, you can also get their most popular made-from-scratch salted caramel spread, dark chocolate, and cherry ganache or lemon curd to use in baking, or as a spread. We won’t judge if you eat it by the spoonful.

Mount Royal Village Family Chiropractic

Sometimes we need to be on the other side of “hands on”, and Mount Royal Village Family Chiropractic (505, 1550 8th St. SW) lends a hand in getting your body aligned to feel great, especially heading into those active summer months. At Mount Royal Village Family Chiropractic, “you are amazing” and their mission is to allow you to feel that way inside and out.

“We’ll help you be your best self by eliminating interferences and optimizing the potential that has always been inside of you,” says Dr. Patrick Maguire. MRVFC specializes in care for the entire family and Dr. Maquire takes pride in his work with expectant moms and patients of all ages. See for yourself and book in with Dr. Pat and his talented team!

Oasis Wellness Centre & Spa

Who doesn’t love the healing touch of a great massage or spa treatment? In fact, going to the spa is great for your mental and physical health. Peter Smed, president of Oasis Wellness Centre & Spa (1508 8th St. SW) tell us “studies have shown that frequently visiting a spa directly correlates with better quality sleep, fewer sick days and helps people attain their health and wellness goals.”

With their new MY Oasis Membership, they’re making spa visits more accessible. You can handpick services and enjoy them on the regular. From couples’ massages, facials, body wraps, manicures, pedicures, and so much more, the opportunities are endless to allow yourself to unwind.
