Chrome Hair Design has been a fixture on 17th Ave for over 12 years. Though this longstanding salon has seen its fair share of changes to the avenue, Chrome has grown steadily and attracted clients from across the city with their sought after stylists.
Owner, Tyler Peterson created the salon with a team-focused vision, and wanted to build a place where stylists come to grow their skills. Chrome’s Creative Director and Stylist, Sue Thompson, offers guidance to the team at Chrome and brings her international perspective to the salon. Sue has attended fashion weeks all over the world, and works closely with the Aveda Global Artistic Director as well as designer Stella McCartney, bringing a incredible amount of experience and exposure to this boutique hair salon.
The newly renovated salon has been beautifully redesigned with dark woods, big lights, and flush cabinets. The decor is clean, organic, minimalist and calming, making everyone feel comfortable as they walk through the door. Stylists use premiere hair brands such as Aveda, Kevin Murphy, and Men’s Department, and Chrome is dedicated to the environment and being conscious of waste. Part of the Green Circle Salon program, the salon recycles everything they can, including chemicals and foils. Their hair care lines are also eco-friendly, and are paraben and sulphate free.
The salon has a team of 13 stylists, including Contessa Stylist of the Year, Philip Elliot. Their well-rounded and eclectic male and female stylists all bring their own talents and unique style to the salon, drawing in a fashionable clientele. The salon works with all hair types and walk-in’s are welcomed, but booking appointments is recommended as chairs fill up quickly.
When the stylists aren’t busy creating the perfect haircut, you may spot them on the avenue. We chatted with Chrome Hair Design manager David Jonathan about their favourite spots.
Fave places to hang out and grab a snack?
Of course Caffe Beano or Analog for coffee and snacks. The Coup for breakfast, lunch, dinner – anytime of the day really. Drinks and cocktails at Ox & Angela, UNA is a must, as well the new pizza place opening up next door (Bensonhurst Pizza Co.) Roosevelt is great for some small bites and casual drinks.
Regular shopping spots?
Leo Boutique for sure, and Purr. Always great to check out the local retailers.
For the more artistic?
If you’re thinking tattoos – Enso is great.
