Cold Weather Gear on 17th Ave

Although February is nearing its end, we know as Calgarians that winter is not quite over. While we ride out what is hopefully the end of these lockdown months and cold weather, many of us are spending as much time outdoors as possible, and if you’re looking to stock up on some cold weather gear, here are a few of the places on 17th Ave that have you covered.

Arc’teryx

Inspired and designed for the Vancouver Coast Mountains – you can literally get to the back country from their Vancouver office headquarters in under 60 minutes – Arc’Teryx apparel is built to withstand the elements. Arc’Teryx is renowned for its lightweight and breathable, yet DWR (durable water repellent) materials, which have the ability to take you from the mountain to the trail, and everything in between. You can shop shells, insulated jackets, base layers, pants, fleece and accessories for all of your outdoor adventures. They also sell a variety of footwear, climbing gear, packs and travel and commuting essentials.

Ski Cellar Snowboard

Ski Cellar Snowboard originated as a general sporting goods store in 1946, and soon after, moved to a new location – where it stands today – on 17th Ave, where they refurbished the basement to service and sell skis (hence the name Ski Cellar). It wasn’t long after that they were only selling ski merchandise, and today, they are known as one of Calgary’s top ski and snowboarding shops. Before your next trip to the mountain, check out Ski Cellar’s vast collection of skis, snowboards, backcountry gear and outwear in all of your favourite brands from Salomon to Burton, Arc’Teryx to Oakley and more. They also have a service shop where they offer ski and snowboard tuning, binding adjustments and mounts, sharpening and waxing and boot fitting adjustments.

Fjällräven

Fjällräven is an outdoor clothing and equipment company that hails from Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, a small town they describe as a place “where mountains and forest meet the sea.” With an utmost respect for the environment at the forefront of all they do, Fjällräven creates durable and functional outdoor wear made to weather all storms. Find winter jackets, shells, trekking jackets, anoraks, vests, base layers, fleece, accessories and more cold weather gear for men, women and children. They also sell a variety of different bags, packs, tents and sleeping bags for all your outdoor excursions – and of course, we can’t forget to mention their infamous Kånken, made with quick drying, water resistance fabric to take you from the trail to your day-to-day activities.

With timeless styles and silhouettes, your Kit and Ace gear is made with functional and technical fabrics that are both comfortable and stylish, and available in styles that can be worn throughout the seasons. Fabrics like their merino wool and brushed French terry are guaranteed to keep you warm for the remainder of Calgary’s long winter season, along with their selection of jackets, sweatshirts, hoodies and accessories like gloves, scarves, mitts and toques.

If you’re up for crafting your own warm weather gear, this is the place to go. Pudding Yarn sells a variety of different yarns in fibres such as merino, alpaca, wool, cashmere and in gauges ranging from chunky to lace. You can also pick up all your knitting essentials here including needles, kits and supplies. Their collection of different patterns will aid you in producing diamond cable socks, bulky scarves and blankets, and for those early in their knitting journey, they also offer a variety of classes you can check out online.

Beyond Scarf

Winter wear doesn’t always have to look like you’re headed down the mountain. This 17th Ave boutique is filled with “wearable art,” and silk scarves adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colours, and at first glance, they may look more like a bold accessory rather than something that will keep you warm, but Beyond Scarf retails a number of different scarves and ponchos made from high quality wools and cashmere. Layer up with beautiful ponchos made from 100% cashmere, or fine knit scarves made up of a wool and cashmere blend, sure to keep you warm on even the coldest Calgary days.

Find a number of different hiking and trail boots as well as a number of different waterproof winter boots from brands like Merrell and Vegetarian Shoes. You can also shop a number of different vegan puffer coats and parkers to shield Calgary’s most treacherous conditions, along with a selection of hats, toques and mittens.

Gravity Pope

You can’t forget about your feet when it comes to staying warm in freezing temperatures.
