Fall for Fashion

We know it’s September when the trees that line the Ave change colour and everyone’s favourite pumpkin spice goodness is on order. Cooler temps mean it’s time to start prepping for more chilly mornings and frosty nights. Luckily, 17th has you covered with trendy back-to-school basics, warm comfort food and cozy knits that might even have you wishing fall would have rolled in sooner.

Pudding Yarn

The minute you walk into this bright and colourful shop, you’re instantly pulled into a world of knitting and crocheting that’ll inspire you to pick up a pair of needles, even if you’ve never knit a day in your life. Pudding Yarn (1516 6th St S.W.) is a well-known staple on the Ave, supplying textile aficionados with locally sourced, international quality supplies to create their wooly gems.

Knitting and crocheting make space for some mindful moments in your day, letting you steadily create something with your own two hands. Choose from a huge supply of pattern magazines and you’ll be on your way to an item that’s both fun and fashion forward.

If you’re new to the trade, Pudding Yarn offers great workshops that take place in the back of the store for all experience levels. From mitts to scarves to socks, you can get the hang of working with wool and stay warm all winter long. Register for classes online at puddingyarn.com.

“You can create your own textures and colour palates, while at the same time engaging in some mental therapy,” says Sharon, owner of Pudding Yarn.

Your wardrobe will be all the richer with something hand made and unique.

Leo Boutique

Ready for a back-to-school wardrobe update, or need to update your fall staples? Leo Boutique (810b 16th Ave S.W.) is the spot to hit up. Located in Mount Royal Village and a longtime haunt of YYC’s fashion scene, this contemporary boutique offers a curated selection of international brands for both men and women.

Owned by husband and wife duo Cornelia and Jon Wiebe, the two travel the world to bring back the latest trends for each and every season. “This season features soft textures and layered looks,” says Cornelia.

Fall is our favourite season for fashion and we are ready!

From denim to dresses to accessories, up your style game with a stop at Leo this season and feel fresh for Fall ’17.

Model Milk

Voted one of Calgary’s best restaurants by Avenue magazine in 2017, Model Milk (308 17th Ave SW) has been serving up their inspired take on cozy classics since 2011. Known for its twist on southern comfort food, you can expect a warm greeting when you walk in and feel charmed by community tables, industrial character, and dim romantic ambiance. Dinner party meets fine dining here, and their philosophy on food is the same as their goal for each of their guest’s experience: building community.

This fall, gather your gang and share a few of small plates like the Foie Gras Parfait, Seed + Soil Greens and their Dry Aged Wagyu Beef Tartare. Or, test out a family-style platter, complete with warm Apple Pie or Chocolate Cremeaux. The special Sunday Supper ($40) is not to be missed, it’s an open invite to the city to gather together and share an intimate dinner, served family-style.
