Known for its delicious pretzel buns and German-style bread, the Rustic Sourdough Bakery & Deli (1305 17 Ave S.W.) has been a staple on the Avenue for more than 40 years. Originally opened by a German fellow named Chalet, the iconic Calgary bake shop is now run and operated by current owner and Swiss Master Baker and Pastry Chef, Jos Rehli.
With years of experience in the trade of artisan sourdough production, Jos and his group of professional bakers and pastry chefs have been crafting breads without the use of preservatives or additives since the early ‘90s, mixing, scaling and shaping everything by hand.
In addition to its buns, baguettes and poundcakes, Rustic offers more than 40 different types of deli meats and cheeses – like hand-picked Swiss cheese and Valbella meats from Canmore – as well as a wide selection of imported groceries from all over Europe.
With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find something to sink your teeth into. But make sure to get there early since popular items move quickly, especially on Saturdays!
