I caught up with Mandy Delaronde at Local 510 on a warm evening in April, just as spring decided to make an appearance in Calgary.
Not only is 17th Ave. a perfect place for sunny days (did somebody say patio?) but it’s also the most ideal destination to scope out some of this season’s hottest trends and fashions, especially as Spring/Summer-inspired outfits begin to make an appearance.
Delaronde’s ’70s-inspired ensemble is one for the books. Sporting a floppy wide-brimmed hat and the most versatile flowy skirt, I can’t even begin to express what my favourite part of Delaronde’s outfit is. If I had to chose, I’d say her sparkly tiger-head-adorned flats take the cake. But to be quite honest, head-to-toe may just be a more appropriate answer.
How would you describe your personal style?
“My personal style is all about layering, accessories, comfort and switching it up often, as fashion is fun and should be played with.”
What’s the last thing you purchased on 17th Ave?
“The last thing I purchased on 17th Ave. was a pair of leather/rubber Sperry boots from Danielle’s Consignment Boutique.
What would you like to see on 17th Avenue in the future?
“I would love to see an eclectic antique/refurbished furniture/decor store. I think old items can be made new and fresh over and over again.”
What are some of your favourite spots on 17th Avenue?
“The Ship and Anchor has been my go-to for many years now and remains one of my favorite bars on 17th. I love looking into Steeling Home for gift ideas and inspiration, and Caffe Beano makes the best Ginger hot chocolate I’ve ever tasted.”
What’s your favourite dish? Fave drink? And where.
“The Dragon bowl at the Coup is a personal favorite of mine, and recently I had the freshest-made mini donuts from Model Milk. For drinks, I’ll usually stop by The Ship and Anchor for a Daura Estrella, the city’s cheapest gluten-free beer.”
Why do you spend time in this area of the city?
“I’ve grown up in Calgary and 17th Avenue is continually evolving, whether through its clothing, food or entertainment – 17th has a lot to offer tourists and locals.”
