Alykhan Velji is a serious Calgary success story. You might have caught him on the Marilyn Denis Show or Celebrity Style Story, and the list doesn’t end there. He’s a busy man about town, from working with various clients through his interior design and decorating company Alykhan Velji Designs, to sharing his fashion knowledge and flair as one half of the Style Guys. So, of course it comes as no surprise that his personal style is also amazing and impeccably put together.
How would you describe your personal style?
I would describe my personal style as classic with an edge. I am a fan of men’s classics such as oxfords shirts, blazers, bow ties, etc., however love to introduce bold colours, patterns and textures in my wardrobe (just as I do with my interiors). Most of my classics have an edge. I think classics can sometimes get a little boring, so amping up them up with a great colour, accessory, or print really helps to elevate the look.
What’s one thing in your closet you couldn’t part with?
My Jack and Jones slim, dark denim jeans. I love these so much and they have stopped producing them, which breaks my heart. I have searched high and low for another pair. The fit is perfect and I can dress them up or dress them down – you can’t go wrong with a perfect pair of denim!
What current fashion trends are you most excited about and why?
I am loving the palm leaf print; anything floral really. You see it everywhere from clothing to wallpaper and I can’t get enough. I think I have a floral or palm print in every item of clothing I own… t-shirts, blazers, shoes and hats.
Anything you would never do when it comes to fashion?
The super skinny jean or the raw style denim has never been for me. The whole thing about not washing your denim just grosses me out. I like to wear clean clothes.
Something within fashion you can’t wait to try that you’re yet to do?
I think it takes a certain person and of course, the right event, but I have always wanted to wear an all white ensemble. One day! Maybe my outfit for next year’s Packwood Grand?
What’s your favourite part of 17th Ave?
I love going for cocktails and I think the resurgence of chic cocktail spots along 17th is making my life right now. There is nothing better than to stop over after work, meet a friend and enjoy a well made, hand-crafted cocktail… or two!
What are some of your most loved spots on the avenue?
Pigeonhole – best cocktails and the best rose I have ever had… Rubaiyat – a staple on 17th ave and a place that I frequent whether it’s shopping for clients or finding that perfect one of a kind gift and Caffé Beano – their coffee and sandwiches will always be my fave.
What else would you like to see on 17th Avenue in the future?
More menswear boutiques! Think Mr. Turk.
