Walk With…Adam Thompson of Friday Sock Co.

Adam Thompson is a colourful guy. After searching for the perfect pair of statement-making socks and coming up short, Adam started developing his own line with a unique design concept: mismatched but matched socks. “I found other mismatched socks out there, but the selection was very limited and the ones I could find were too crazy for my taste.” shares Thompson.

With that he began creating his own styles, socks that were thin enough to be worn with a suit and thick enough to be worn on a Saturday. A year later, he officially launched Friday Sock Co. and you can find his designs at Purr on 17th, and at other retailers across Calgary. We caught up with Adam to see how he spends his time on the avenue when he’s not busy designing his next pair of subtly mismatched socks.

Describe your perfect day on 17th:
I’m lucky to live just off 17th Ave and so have developed a loop that I typically take. If I’m stopping for breakfast I will usually hit up Galaxie Diner on 14th Ave and now that Kartar has opened up just down the street, it makes for a good place to start my walk. If I start my loop right on 17th ave I’ll usually stop at Crepes & Cravings (they do a killer gluten free crepe) and then head across the street to Steeling Home, where there’s always something new to be discovered. I’ll continue down 17th, stopping in at a variety of shops including the usual suspects: Reid’s, Less 17, Mona Lisa Artist’s Materials, and of course Purr – who carry my line of mismatched socks. On my way back home, I’ll have a drink on one of the 17th ave patios, and also make a quick stop at Big Star Bake House for a delicious moon pie.

Where’s your favourite spot to grab a bite?
?It’s gotta be Ox & Angela, Una Pizza, Cibo or The Living Room. There are too many great places on 17th to narrow it down to just one.

When the day is done… the best place to go for a night out?

A good night out for me is a place that I can chat and relax with friends. 1410 World Bier Haus is not only close to home, but also has a lively/fun environment and an awesome selection of beer.

What’s up next for Friday Sock Co.?
After launching in January, and getting some great support locally, we’re now in the process of designing 4 – 6 new styles which will be launched in June/July. Our goal is to create a larger selection of product that will appeal to a variety of customers whether they want to mismatch a little, or mismatch a lot. We’re also now getting involved in some really cool collaborations which we are very excited about. We will also soon launch a Friday Sock Co. subscription service, and will be also expanding our line into a kids collection.
