It’s time to celebrate our home and native land, the true north, strong and free! On July 1, join us in a Canada Day celebration on 17th Ave, where you can enjoy free events and performances from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the heart of 17th Ave. With musical acts, hoop dancing and more happening throughout the day, as well as some of 17th Ave’s best restaurants and local shops just steps away, the Red Mile has all the essentials for an epic day.
Canada Day Events from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The festivities kick off at 11 a.m. with a performance in the Tomkins Park gazebo from Emily Vay, a local Calgary artist who combines poetic singer-songwriter pop with contemporary, electronic flourishes. During her act, you can also catch a stilt walker from the Little Red Ball Company, who will be wandering throughout the park greeting visitors on this special holiday.
Hoop Dancing, Dance Performances and More
Stick around, because once Emily Vay wraps up with her first set, there will be a hoop dancing performance from Plains Cree, Lakota Tootoosis, followed by more performances from theatrical company, the Little Red Ball, including an aerial artist and Oopsy Hoopsy, a circus hoola hooper.
Enjoy Lunch Between Festivities on 17th Ave
Later in the afternoon after you’ve grabbed lunch from one of the many nearby 17th Ave eateries — find everything from coffee and baked goods to vegan cheeseburgers, gourmet poutine, ice cold beer and more — you can catch dance performances from Arthur Murray Dance Studio and Jet Dance. If the mood strikes you, you can bust a move.
The day wraps up with two more sets from talented local artist, Emily Vay, and one last hoop dancing performance from Lakota.
17th Ave really comes to life in the summer with numerous patios, various parks, community events and some of Calgary’s best local businesses. Celebrate the spirit of Canada and everything it embodies on 17th Ave. Find the full list of events here!
