Blanco Cantina

On a drizzly and grey winter’s day, we found ourselves dreaming of warmer lands and craving food to match. Enter Blanco, a Mexican eatery on 17th Ave (723 17 Ave SW) that specializes in distracting you from a dreary day. Warm up with a hot french press, or if you have the type of day where you can fiesta, sip the chill away with a tasty margarita or two.

On this particularly chilly day, we start off with chips and guacamole for $8.75, a staple at any Mexican eatery worth its salt; the chips are perfectly seasoned and the guac is bright and zesty.

The main entree of choice is the Jefe Pablo burger for $21.88. It comes with two sides, so we try the refritos and fries. The burger is piled with caramelized onions, spicy jalapeños, habaneros and queso fresco. A burger might not seem like the right choice at a cantina, but this one definitely was. The delicious burger was covered in rich sauce layered with the sweetness of caramelized onions and spicy peppers. This is the kind of burger you want to take your time with, using a knife and a fork and dipping the fries in the sauce atop the patty.

If you’re still feeling fresh after lunch, call for uno mas at the well-stocked bar and try one of the tequilas or rums from their huge 50/50 list.20160220-DSC_3148
If you don’t have a lot of time for a sit-down lunch, Blanco offers a tidy and satisfying solution in the form of their Speedo Burrito. Get any of their burritos to go (steak, chicken or veggie) with a soda for $7.50 or a half size for just $6.50, from 11am to 3pm every day of the week.20160220-DSC_3200_resized20160220-DSC_3214_resized
As part of The Big Taste, Blanco will be featuring a 3-course lunch which will feature non-other than their Speedo Burrito, from March 3rd to March 13th, as well as a prix fixe dinner for $25. Check out the menus and buy tickets here.

Winter at Blanco is great, but we can’t wait until their patio opens this spring. The garage-style doors make it easy to turn the whole restaurant into street seating.  Soon we will be sipping pretty on Blanco’s outdoor patio, but until then, we’ll have to sit inside the cantina and pretend.
