Attention all music lovers and vinyl-junkies: Blackbyrd Myoozik (1126 17th Ave SW) is the hippest new addition to the Ave’s music scene. Hailing from hometown rival Edmonton, Blackbyrd was established in 1993 and has finally weaved its well-established roots into YYC. Stocking music of all genres in a variety of formats, this little vinyl shop will send you on the happiest of hunts.

The newly renovated building is home to the holy grail of retail trifectas – proud neighbours Sweet Lollapalooza and Gravity Pope round out the shopping experience with sweet shoes and even sweeter confections. Grab an americano from the well-dressed folk at the full-service coffee bar in Lollapalooza, and make moves down some quick steps into vinyl heaven.

Blackbyrd stocks a wide range of records (new and old), as well as a selection of affordable audio gear, most notably Pro-ject turntables, Cambridge amps and Wharfedale speakers. They also feature a very sophisticated special order service with access to unique vinyl or compact discs anywhere worldwide. Though the real magic of this place is the exceptional sales staff who help navigate your wild musical tastes and embrace you because of them.

On making the jump from YEG to YYC, co-owner Arthur Fafard says that “17th Ave is a natural fit, as the area is home to an eclectic array of independent stores and restaurants that appeal to many of the same people who love records and music culture.”

“I’ve always been impressed by the strong and varied music scene in Calgary.”

Nicely settled into their new digs, Blackbyrd is now preparing for the biggest day of their year – Record Store Day (April 16th). With exclusive and limited titles available special for the occasion, Blackbyrd will also have live in-store performances and a storewide sale of 20% off. Good thing they have coffee because it’s been told that line ups can start as early as 6am!
